It pays to be a great footballer

Football, or soccer has been around for many years. It started as a game for leisure, but somehow it has evolved into an industry, where professional football clubs make money from competing against each other on several levels, by sponsorship and also TV rights.

As a team sport, a football team needs eleven players playing during a game. There are too many football players on Earth, for which can be classified from amateurs, semi-pros, pros, and the highest level of all, world class players. What set these world class players apart from the rest of the players?

If you can run and kick a ball, then you can join a game of football. But do you know that a world class player can get paid up to £100,000 on a weekly basis? That is more than my mother's annual salary working a government nurse here in Malaysia! How can a person lands that amount of money just by running around kicking a football, week in and week out?

It is simple. Let us see it this way. A football club is company, and a football player is the employee. What the employer wants is an employee who can drive the company to success, that is by winning league titles, or by winning just any prestigous competitions on the offer, such as the Uefa Champions League. By employing great players, they will increase the club's chance of winning titles and the club will not only gain glory, but also gold! Paying over £100,000 per week to a world class player like Steven Gerrard of Liverpool is like investing the money so that the club can compete for the Barclays Premier League title. Manchester City paid handsome wages to their players, in a bid to enter European competition.

So who is the best paid footballers? It is Leo Messi of Barcelona. He is only 22, younger than I am, but last year alone he managed to rake €33m! Well, he deserves that kind of money. He maybe young, but he is already a football icon. The young Argentine is a wonder in football, who possesses amazing skills, pacy and creative in his play. Barcelona pay him handsomely because of his talents, so that the team can win the league and gain more income in return.

There are a more notable world class footballers, the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Carlos Tevez, Gianluigi Buffon, Didier Drogba and many others who are paid with crazy amount of money. Giant clubs offer them that kind of salaries because they want the players to propel the clubs to success, and also to try and keep them from moving to other big clubs.

I always wonder why athletes get paid so much more than people whose work is vital to everyone, like teachers. It's probably proof that it's still such a man's world out there.

Their personal glories aside, these athletes entertain people with their abilities, which do not exclusively belong to them, but they are able to use those abilities to make themselves special, or different from the rest of us. I myself is going to be a teacher, and I don't have to guess what my monthly income is going to be, because that's what I can get with what I have.

It's a tricky subject to talk about, they do obviously get paid way to much but their are solid debates for either side of the coin.
